While neighboring Kentucky might be better known for its horse racing, it is fairly popular in Indiana. To meet the demand of its increasing popularity, a couple of horse racing venues have opened up in Indiana. While there is no live racing in Indianapolis itself, there is simulcasting available in Downtown Indianapolis, and live racing is not located too far away.

Indiana Grand Racing and Casino

Indiana Grand Racing and Casino is a large casino and horse racing track located in Shelbyville, Indiana, about 45 minutes from Carmel. Live racing is held between April 19th and October 29th on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Racing starts at 2:05pm during the week and 6:05pm on Saturdays. Between July 7th and August 25th, there is also racing at 2:05pm on Thursdays.  This race track has thoroughbreds and occasionally quarter horses. Additionally, there is simulcasting, allowing patrons to place bets on horse races throughout the country.

Hoosier Park Racing and Casino

Like Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, Hoosier Park Racing and Casino is located outside of Indianapolis. This horse racing venue is located in Anderson, just 25 minutes from Fishers. Hoosier Park Racing and Casino has harness racing rather than thoroughbred racing. Its live races occur at 5:45pm Tuesday through Saturday. It also has simulcasting, allowing betting for races at other horse racing venues.

Ellis Park

Ellis Park is another horse racing venue, but it is far away in Kentucky, just over the Indiana-Kentucky border from Evansville. It takes Northside residents about three hours to get there, meaning it might be a good place to go for an overnight trip. There is live racing starting at 12:50pm Central Daylight Time, which is 1:50pm in the Indianapolis area, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Ellis Park’s live horse racing season is much shorter than Indiana Grand’s and Hoosier Park’s race seasons. It starts on July 2nd and runs until Labor Day in 2016. Like Indiana Grand and Hoosier Park, however, there is simulcasting.

Winner’s Circle in Downtown Indianapolis

Northside residents who do not want to travel far from home can head down to Winner’s Circle on Pennsylvania Street in Downtown Indianapolis. Unfortunately, there is no live racing at this venue. It does have simulcasting, however. In addition to making horse bets, visitors can sit at this venue’s bar and order drinks or food at good prices. It is open between 11:00am and midnight Monday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, it opens at 11:00am and closes at 2:00am. It opens at noon and closes at midnight on Sundays.
